A History of Mouths

A river mouth is a strange thing. It is not the source. It is not the destination. It is the place where a watershed becomes visible. Mountains arrive there. Tributaries arrive there. Settlements, sediments, infrastructures, climates, and migrations arrive there. The mouth gathers them without owning them. The mouth lets them speak. This book proposes that many of humanity’s most important inventions have been mouths. The coordinate system. The atlas. The diagram. The differential. The scientific instrument. The architectural project. The prompt. These are not merely tools for representing the world. They are technologies through which worlds become articulate. Against the contemporary language of prompt engineering, Mündungen develops another vocabulary: probes, translations, crossings, estuaries, watersheds, and technologies of articulation. What kind of instrument allows a form to travel? What kind of arrangement allows a field to speak? How does a river acquire a mouth? And what does it mean to become mature—not as an autonomous individual, but as a careful steward of articulations larger than oneself? Moving between philosophy, architecture, cartography, hydrography, media theory, and the history of science, this book reconstructs a hidden lineage of epistemic instruments.
