Essay

Artefacts Cast Shadows.
Toward an Ecology of Instrumentality

Artefacts are commonly understood as objects, tools, or technical means employed to achieve predetermined ends. This essay proposes another conception. An artefact becomes significant not through what it contains or produces, but through the relations it allows to become visible. Every worthy artefact casts a shadow larger than itself. These shadows are not absences of light but atmospheres of articulation, where heterogeneous worlds discover temporary correspondence. From the gnomon and the amphora to the prompt and the portico, artefacts appear as ecological instruments that cultivate relation rather than command it.
